FAQs about the 2021-'22 MILE
1) Which students should join us on the MILE?
Any student who would already be signing up for freshman English and biology and who is interested in a different and exciting project-based learning approach to school. 2) How will courses in the MILE be approached differently than the individual English and biology classes? In the MILE students are presented with a challenge like “How Might We Solve Interesting Problems Creatively?” Students, faculty, and community organizations will then work together to explore the challenge from English and science points of view before proposing solutions. 3) Will the MILE cover the same material as the individual courses? Yes, in the MILE we will cover the same material as individual English 9 and biology courses. Instead of studying material in isolation or chronological order, it will be examined thematically and in relationship to each other. 4) How will students earn grades in this class? Students will earn individual grades for English 9 and biology. Those grades are formulated by performance assessments reflecting each of the content area standards as outlined by the Indiana DOE. 5) If I'm planning to earn an academic honors diploma, how does the MILE class fit in? The MILE is flexible for students on the path to earning the academic honors degree. In fact all students enrolled in the MILE may opt into earning honors credits in both subject areas. Students will be well-suited for AP, ACP, and dual credit courses in English and science following their experience in this class. |
